[I saw that error myself today, and I am actually testing a fix as I type.

Hm, i've got the error again. I' changed nothing.
Is this an Java-Error? Do you have a new beta?

No new beta yet.

The error happens because of a change I made to the XML import.

For creating web pages, I suggest going back to a previous version 0.4b1 (or even 0.35). For importing cast and crew, just ignore the error, because the imported XML isn't used.

New beta!

I had planned to release a fully-featured 0.4b3 next week with editing support for cast/crew, but you'll have to make do with this compatibility update instead... (thanks IMDb!)

Standalone download
(no Firefox extension for this beta)

Changes since 0.4b2
  • Works with IMDb's newly redesigned pages [1]

  • Support for Windows Vista [2]

  • Fixed an off-by-one counting bug that stopped first name prefixes from being parsed correctly in some circumstances

  • Cast without a role are no longer assigned a bogus role

  • Episode list is cleared after each run

  • Disabled plugins in the browser window to speed up page loads

  • Fixed 'reference error' that occurred on first import of XML

  • Known issues
  • The back button doesn't work

  • You shouldn't have to import XML before using the cast

  • Translations aren't complete.

  • You can't edit the cast/crew info after extracting it from IMDb (I suggest using Tom's editor if you need to)

  • *All the rules that applied to DVDFolks apply to the IMDb stuff as well - mainly:
    1) check names/roles against the actual credits before submitting to the online DB.
    2) keep discussion of the IMDb stuff off of the IVS forum - the best place to send comments/bug reports is probably the old DVDFolks mailing list

[1]I haven't tested this exhaustively, but it seems to work OK

[2]Programs running under Vista can't write to 'Program Files' - attempted writes to this location are silently redirected to a 'Virtual Store', affecting just about every file DVD Profiler saves. When running under Vista, the Companion now looks in the 'Virtual Store' for DVD Profiler's files.

Maybe I'm just thick or something, but... How do I install the new beta?

I downloaded the 7z-archived file "companion0.4b.exe" and extracted it, but I can't find any installer-exe inside. Do I need to download something else first? I don't have any previous version of the program in this PC.

    Thanks in advance!

There's nothing to install. Go ahead and just run the Companion.exe file that's in the new folder.

It may give an error, in which case you need to install the C++ Runtime Libraries, available on the companion page on Doug's site (it's mentioned in one of the two red boxes). But chances are, you already have them from some other software.

Okay, I guess I am thick

I installed the Runtime libraries and at least the initial error message is gone, so I guess I'm set. Have to update the latest purchases into the Profiler before exporting xml and being able to test it further.

    Thanks for the quick help!

Not yet no - every time I have thought about sitting down and working out the changes I need to make to the code, something has happened to stop me - bugs found in the XML export, power cut, more bugs in the XML, legal action...
