Hi,

Just bought a barcode scanner and started using DVD profiler to keep track of my collection. Great product  , but i found a number of minor irritations while creating the list, and have some ideas for some nice features.

Nags  :
  - Would be nice if the "Prompt for personalisation" option could be setup to be unchecked per default.
  - When scanning an unknown barcode the "Validate EAN dialog" opens. Why isn't the barcode filled in automatically
  - When cancelling the "Validate EAN dialog" or the confirmation of 13 digit barcode dialog, the text in the EAN field in the Add dialog should be selected. If you at current try to rescan the DVD, the barcode is concatenated with the data already in the field
  - Titles should be inserted at the top of the "Pending additions" list in stead of added at the end. This would mean that you always look at the same spot on the screen to confirm the title found for the barcode, and that the last scanned title will be visible even if you scanned allot of titles in the same session.

Missing Features  :
  - A more intuitive add dialog. If the barcode is not found in the DB automatically ask for title. When the title is found, import the information for this title, updated the EAN and ask for disc details and suggest uploading the information to the DB.

  - Download actions in separate thread. When pushing "Add now" in the add dialog, you have to wait until all information for the new titles has been downloaded. If the download was performed in a separate thread in the background, it would be possible to scan more movies while downloading.

  - Command line arguments for scheduled operations. it would be nice to be able to schedule a daily update of the IVS tables and My profiler as well as performing backups. This could be easily achieved by accepting a few command line arguments like: -UploadMyProfile, -DownloadMyProfile, -UpdateLists, -Backup

  - A loan dialog would be nice. When a friend loans several DVD's at once it would be nice to have a loans dialog the specify the name of the loaner and scan the barcodes of the DVD's he/she is loaning.

I couldn't aggree more with you on your evaluation, I think those are excellent ideas. Every single one of them I thought of and wish were added.... I do really like profiler, but the fact that I can't seem to find any signs of dvdprofiler ever releasing a new version, these probably wont end up in there.

Exsqueeze me, zimmer. At least speak factually. You have been around since 2002 so you know that IVS has released several new versions of the software. We have been stuck on hold with the current Beta due to circumstances which could well be beyond the control of the people at IVS. You can be annoyde about that, many are. But it does not automatically mean there will be no new versions. IVS is clearly alive and well as demonstrated by the weekly database updates that are generated, so we are simply in a hurry up and wait mode.

Being a scanner user myself, my 2cents,

I use it, but, if you (and other) don't, as long as it's as option, cool by me

Because it's a Validation screen. It's purpose is to force you to re-scan the bar code again to confirm it wasn't a mis-read. It's like the internet sites that force you to write your password twice upon registration to confirm you didn't made a typo. If it pre-filled the value it'd be pretty useless as confirmation/validation of the reading, wouldn't it?

You kind of lost me there... Let's check if I got it right. It finds a new barcode. Doesn't know it. So asks you for the title. You insert it, and you'd like DVDpro to immediately download the info for any release of that title?
If that's it, I'd say it should let you choose between the several releases it has registered, so that you could choose the one that most resemble yours, for future editing and contribution. Immediately suggesting a contribution would be too big an invitation for submitting without properly editing the profile, if you ask me...

But aren't you supposed to only click "add now" when you have all your new dvd's added to the list?

Nothing against this one mate, but I really don't think DVDProfiler was thought for a market of such "logistical" needs, that would need daily backups and Down/uploads of the collection to the site all done automatically...

I believe you are entering the market of video rentals software there, and not a simple personal collection manager that allows you to know which DVDs you have and their specifications like DVDProfiler. Could DVDProfiler have those advanced loan/rent features. Well, of course, but then it'd have to shift markets and face the competitions of the other softwares that include those features. Problem is, softwares that include features such as the one you're asking are on the range of the hundreds of dollars and not  the 25-30 dollars range of DVDProfiler (or even free). We mustn't forget what price range we are paying and what features we should expect from it. It's not really reasonable to start asking DVDPro to do the same as the "hundred(s) dollars" softwares.
With every passing hour our solar system comes forty-three thousand miles closer to globular cluster M13 in the constellation Hercules, and still there are some misfits who continue to insist that there is no such thing as progress.
