I just thought of this idea when i was going through my receipts. What if we had just a local scan and store function in DVD Profiler to store your receipts for later reference.

My needs for such a feature include:
1. I'm buying in bulk these days, 20-30 single titles on special, and i don't have time to watch them and make sure they work. I have had a few dodgy DVD manufacturers make a few dud disks, and with store return policy's getting tighter, you need "Proof of Purchase". So if a year goes by and you've lost your original receipt, you can print out the digital copy, which they would have to accepts as you have given them proof.
2. Ability to throw out paper receipts.
3. If a fire destroyed my receipts, DVD Profiler would still have them. (Assuming you backup and store your database to somewhere away from your computer. I.e. on CD at work, file storage on the Net etc. And because of the size, it wouldn't be available in My Collection hosted on IVS).

I understand the side effects would be a bigger .DPB database file. Mines at 90mb and i only have 700+ titles.

In the NOTES section, I place the
'date of the order w/receipt number'
yyyymmdd receipt number
yyyy = year,
mm=month,
dd=day,
example of a Amazon receipt:
20060105 002-9999999-0000000
On an external USB drive I catalog them as follows:
L:\eStores\store/year\20060105 000-9999999-0000000.rft

After coping the receipt I strip out all the superfluous bs.
The 'Purchased'' section, I set the date the order was actually charged/shipped.

For the DVDs I know I won’t be viewing for awhile, DDD's two for one sales, example: the 50 dvd set ‘Andromeda: Slipstream Collection’, I test them with a program like ‘VSO Inspector’, ‘DVDInfo Pro’ or the like while I do something else.

It does wear out DVD driives after a few years.
It helps if you have two DVD drives, I just replaced both of mine better, dual layer burners.
My first computer was a UNIVAC I, and there aren't many of us left.

koluns81...

Not a bad idea? I doubt I would use it myself, but seems like a good idea.

For now you might want to go ahead and scan your receipts to sub folders within your DVDP folder. I would imagine you could select a skin or customize a skin to allow for you to create a 'RECEIPT' link to the scanned receipt for the Movie/TV Show/etc,,, Same idea as when you click on actors names except it would open a graphics viewer app to view it.
Maybe some how you could get it to open within DVDP like the cover scans open?
I've only done minor customizing of skins so I'm not the one to ask how to set it all up as I described above.
Another idea would be to do without the back cover scans and simply use the scan of your receipt in place of them. I like having the back cover scans myself, but it would work !

Use the notes field.

1: Set the options for Notes to display HTML
2: Create a folder to hold your images in DVD Profiler (C:\Program Files\Intervocative Software\DVD Profiler\Receipts)
3: Save your scan in this folder.
4: Add a link to the image to your notes field.

Good idea Touti...

Touti's notes idea is probably the way to go (simple and effective) to avoid having to customize a skin. You can still use the notes window for,,, well,,, notes and just have the 'RECEIPTS' link at the top or bottom of the window. It would be cool to have a link built into the your favorite skin I think. That way you could place it where ever you wanted.

I need to go though all my receipts sometime. I have two boxes full of 'em from when I purchased my first DVD many years ago. I'd hate to scan them all in though.

The last thing I would want to do now is scan all of my DVD  receipts. I keep them in large envelopes unsorted but have start and end dates marked on them. Aprox: 6 months of receipts are in each envelope. When I fill up an envelope I toss it into my safe.

Just the thought of scanning all my receipts!? ARGH !

You know, what I'd really like to see more of in this forum is debate on whether or not a particular feature request has merit, rather than a discussion of how one would abuse either the notes feature or the tags feature to implement it in the current release.

Telling someone to use notes is roughly equivalent to saying "Here's a pencil, just write it down on a piece of paper." Yes, it will probably work, but if that was an acceptable solution it's unlikely that anyone would have posted their idea here in the first place.

As for this particular request, I wouldn't use it personally, but it seems like a decent idea. I'd personally like to see this implemented as a general mechanism for storing additional customized scans - the scan of the receipt, the scan of the disc itself, a scan of my bare buttocks pressed against the glass of the scanner, or whatever. The scan fields should be customizable per user, and not submittable to the online database.

Same for me. The "notes" and "tags" fix for everything is getting a little old and tired.
ZOINKS! I hope I haven't turned into a guy that says "use a tag to fix it!" for every thing. I'll end up irritating myself!

Bottom line is,,, it seems to me like any updates or new features are not going to happen or at least happen any time soon. So in the mean time users can only offer assistance with the tools available or come up with some slick work around that may or may not work very well. <sigh>

It would be a lot of work to scan receipts, but I honestly would do it. I had a problem in 1998 and lost most of my belongings. The insurance company gave us a hard time paying for our claim because they wanted copies of receipts and stuff, but the ones we had were destroyed in the accident. This type of feature would have likely saved us 7 years of hassles. Additionally, I've noticed most modern receipts seem to lighten over time or turn black when exposed to heat. This would help keep a record of receipts in these cases as well.
