Hmmmm that is an interesting concept, Karsten.

It's not only an interesting concept, it is also a basic database concept. Few with a bit of databse theory under the hood would design the database as DVD Profiler is designed today (it's crammed with redundant information). It is totally obvious (to me anyway) that movies and DVDs are two different things. Also, persons should also have a distinct database entities. Today, persons are solely matched on their names, making two different actors with the same name, the same actor and an actor who is also a director are two different persons. If the program handled movies and persons the same way as it handled DVD's, it would be a much more powerful tool.

That's a great idea. It would ultimately save database space.

However, occasionally the end credits change depending on the DVD version. Not often, I guess, but it does happen (Criterion's Brazil set has the mutilated TV version, which does have different credits). That would need to be accommodated for.

It's not a problem as long as you can enter alternative versions to a movie with alternative credit list (could also be used for different dubs) or a simple way would be to list one as "Brazil" and one as "Brazil: Love Conquers All Edition" (or whatever).

Animated movies frequently also have different people doing voices depending on the country. Even between the US and UK. Apparently we don't know who Larry King is and get lumbered with Jonathan Ross in Shrek 2 for example.

It would be so nice to design the database in a way that you have a movie, then local variations then then dvd's on that. Loads of work for the poor programmers and maintaince might be interesting. I did last year sit down and start designing a way to do it all. However, it got very complicated very quickly.

For tv episode handling it worked well (at least my design). As each episode had its own profile, which was then assigned to a disc (or mulitple discs). So if someone added info to the episode it changed all versions that had that. Language/localities is the hard bit I found.

In this case it would be easy because I know the movie is "One flew over the cuckoo's nest" but what if I don't know that ?

Use the title from the credits.

That was my first answer but sometimes, though I will admit it's not very common, the credits are modified to display the translated title.

I know it sounds like I'm searching needles in a hay stack but the think is that this is easy when we take american movies dubbed in french.  It is not that simple when you take "foreign" (gee I hate this expression  ) movies which have french and english versions on the DVD but not necessarily the original version.  Best example of that is "The Fall/La chute", if the credits have been edited then it's not easy to find what the original german title was.

I know there's IMDB and 100's of sites but if a DVD program wants to separate the movie part from the dvd part and share the common part of the movie such as cast & crew between all versions, I think it should provide the means of doing it without forcing me to go check somewhere else.
