Here is a fix for the annoying access violation when exiting DVD Profiler (2.4 or 2.5 beta) on Windows Vista.  It involves a change to the Windows Registry, so take all normal precautions, backups, etc. before making the change.  The change listed is in the form of a registry merge file - copy and paste into a file called dvdpvistafix.reg and use the import function in RegEdit.  Or edit the Registry directly navigating to the key shown and the values below.

Original registry entry:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{ADB880A6-D8FF-11CF-9377-00AA003B7A11}\InprocServer32]
@=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,6f,00,74,00,25,\
  00,5c,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,68,00,68,00,\
  63,00,74,00,72,00,6c,00,2e,00,6f,00,63,00,78,00,00,00

New registry entry:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{ADB880A6-D8FF-11CF-9377-00AA003B7A11}\InprocServer32]
@=hex(2):43,00,3a,00,5c,00,57,00,49,00,4e,00,44,00,4f,00,57,00,53,00,5c,00,53,\
  00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,68,00,68,00,63,00,74,00,\
  72,00,6c,00,2e,00,6f,00,63,00,78,00,00,00

Note that this is hexadecimal code for the following strings: "%SystemRoot%\System32\hhctrl.ocx" in the original and "C:\WINDOWS\System32\hhctrl.ocx" in the new.  Make sure the new matches where you installed Vista on your system.

Myself and IVS do not take responsibility for any data loss due to this modification.

Seems there is still some activity.

This fix does not make me want to go back to 2.x. There are more issues with 2.x compared to 3 than just a vista fix.

You publish a fix to your own software, and don't take any responsibility for it? what gives?
Here's a thought - call Ken ! Oh, I forgot - you are in the middle of a legal dispute... too bad. Better luck next time.

Read any article which offers up registry modifications.  The author(s) are clear to disavow any issues which may occur from making registry changes, as safe and tested as they may be.

If you don't want to use the fix, feel free not to - it's not required.

Thank you for the fix Jesse. I tried it on a test machine and it works as advertised.

Just sort out Your problems with Ken, so that we can go further with version 3.02.
Most of us don't go back to version 2.4 or 2.5.

Yea, thanks Jesse...we will get right on editing our registy.  NOT

You think this feeble attempt on making a bug go away will make us happy that we are stuck using your program that you dont give a crap about updating?

Im tired of this jumping through hoops to make a program I paid for a long time ago work.

Settle with Ken or shut the whole thing down.  STOP SCREWING WITH US!!

screw this im pissed.

Have you guys considered that there may be people still using 2.4/2.5 who welcome this fix...?

I run Vista, and this key does not exist.  Any other ideas?

I gotta be honest, Jesse, the vast majority of the community is no longer interested in 2.X; they've moved on and - it may sound a bit harsh - but, you gotta learn to deal with that.

It'd be kinda like Microsoft offering a fix for a bug in Windows 98.  Some people might be interested... but that vast majority are more interested in a faster, more user-friendly, more feature-packed product.

This is why it is important for you, IVS, and (more importantly) the user-base to find some type of settlement.  This is a lose-lose situation right now for you if you continue down this road.  I don't know how many more times you have to hear this before it finally sinks in, but I hope it's not too many.

I know I haven't posted much on the forums, however I have thoroughly enjoyed using DVDP for years... until now, that is.  I only continue to use it now with the hope that IVL retains ownership of DVDP and I am confident that I represent the majority.

Please... fix this now.

Registry modification articles are written by HACKERS to make program changes the creators did not intend.

Why should anyone want to run version 2.4/5 under Vista, which has been developed for W98, when there's a more sophisticated version available? Well yeah the online function has been forced to shutdown for no apparent reason, but that does not stop me from using it. For over a year you kept us touching in the dark and now suddenly there's a fix. This does not change anything, it only strengthens my anger against IVS which also gets bigger each passing day...

What do I bung in the registry to get credit dividers and "credited as" functionality?

Jesse, can you please tell us what exactly that registry change does?

What did the original entry do, what does the new one do?

Does this affect or even deactivate any of the security settings of Vista?

TBH, calling these undocumented registry changes a "fix" is very far-fetched. They are a work-around at best, unless you are able to exactly tell us what their effect is, and that they have no negative effect on anything else on the system.
