If you were unfortunate enough to pick this title up at Best Buy go back and have them price match to Circuit City. There is a FULL $10.00 difference. BB is selling this one at $69.99 while CC has it for $59.99.

How is the set?

I've never seen it before, but it looks intriguing. Is it worth a blind purchase?

I don't know yet. My wife is having surgery in about a week and we're saving it for recoup time. It's one of her all-time favs.

This is one of those strange titles that on the surface seems like it would appeal to men and when you sit down to watch it is when you realize your wife likes it better than you do. All 9 hours of it.    It was a very succesful mini series and is among the best in my opinion. It's an adventure story about a young man who is shipwrecked in early 1700s Japan which was closed to all foreigners at the time. The story follows him through many life struggles, including a very romantic love story that takes the main theme in parts, on a journey to become the first foreigner 'Gai-Jin' to become a Samurai. All of the reviews I have read so far have said it looks far better than ever seen in the past. Not hard to believe considering it was made for TV in 1980. So if you enjoy adventure/love stories this one will capture your attention, hold you in suspense and won't dissapoint.

Enjoy

Thanks!
I may have to check this out, I am a growing fan of samurai/Asian films. May be cool to see it with an American bent. That being said, I am really looking forward to The Last Samurai....

I hope the surgery gooes well.

Thanks, we do too.

I'm sure you'll like it then. Make sure to watch it with your wife/significant other. Like I said, she will like it better than you will.

Have not viewed the enire set as yet. However here is a quick and dirty take. While not perfect it is an excellent version and in view of the earlier rumors about the condition of the film elements probably as good as it will ever look. The sound is superb given its age. The colors are true and for the most parts the blacks  and contrast levels are very good, I did observe some occassional edge enhancement. I'll give it a B+

Thanks Dan/Skip.
It's a bit above my budget at the moment, I have been buying WAY too many disks....
But it will get added to the wishlist!

Thanks Draven,
She's doing much better than anticipated and I got her home last night.   She has already asked, "When are we gonna watch Shogun?" So I'll let you know what I think of the DVD set in a day or two.

It is excellent.
Awaiting the arrival of Captain Kronos... My newest addiction is tracking down some Hammer films.

I watched the set and found the sound very nice. I think I prefer the surround track over the mono. It gave a better sense of being in the scene without the surround being overdone which is often the case lately (Disney Surround on Lion King). Nice job on Shogun though. I would rate it a 4 with 5 being best.

The video isn't bad considering the age of the original print and that it was made for TV. I did find two spots in the transfer that should have been cleaned up. The first was on disc one where our future Shogun is on his ship facing the camera. There are some serious coloration problems in this shot and it almost appears to have a white veil over the lense. I think it's scene 13. What a mess. It kinda resembles looking through sheers used as window treatment. Thankfully it only lasts about 10 seconds. The second is on disk 3. Similar to the "veil" on the first disc but not as pronounced. It is still very noticeable and distracting. I would exchange the disks if this were an option but since it is a set that is over 9 hours long I guess I can try to ignore it. Not including these two blotches I would rate the video transfer a 3 of 5. Not bad (other than the two spots) but nothing to write home about.

Thanks! Not sure when I'll be able to pick this up. Been spending way too much money as it is, can't believe I was at 400 at the beginning of the year and now I'm past 900!
I need to get that Battlestar Galactica box!

I thought I'd done well this month, banning myself from buying a single DVD (cos of Chrimbo I told myself). Then, the other day, this copy of Narc sneaked into the house! I swear I can't explain it! Or the £10 note that is no longer in my wallet...
