THIS THREAD HAS BEEN DEPRECATED IN FAVOUR OF THE LIST IN THE COMMUNITY KNOWLEDGE BASE. ANY NEW REQUESTS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TRACKED SHOULD BE ADDED THERE INSTEAD.
(I will sync this list periodically with the new one - it's not being completely retired)

Every week there are suggestions for improvement to DVD Profiler, which more-often-than-not are repeats of previous suggestions from the week before (well intentioned I'm sure). I have started this thread as an attempt to have an easy way to see what has been suggested before as the list is quite big! The following is what a quick search discovered. If there is something I have missed then please post it!

N.B. New feature requests should be in a topic by themselves, so that related discussion can be found easily - it's also much easier for me to find new requests that way.

I include known bugs as feature requests (as in 'please can you fix them')

I am not a member of IVS and inclusion on the list does not mean that IVS will necessarily do anything about it! (though it would be nice)

Website bugs - IVS officially support IE and Mozilla only.
  • My-Profiler - em-dash/en-dash don't show up correctly in online collection

  • My-Profiler - Hebrew characters don't show correctly anymore

  • New Account creation success message is preceded by an 'invalid'/'expired' key error

  • Forum - cannot have two links on the same line

  • Can subscribe multiple times to the same topic

  • Subscription often doesn't work or sends multiple messages/post

  • Fix HTML (& should be &amp; - even in links, lots of extraneous </td> and </tr>, <script> needs type attribute, need <ul> before <li>, lots of non-standard attributes, missing some </a>, +others)

  • Use correct CSS (no unit specified for most widths, cursor: hand should be cursor: pointer, remove filter)

  • Fix JavaScript (undeclared variable RapidSpellWebLauncher2__ctl0Out) redeclared variables (NewWin, str), CopyToClipboard doesn't always return a value, assignment(=) used instead of equality (==), dates don't display in forums with JS disabled, </TAG> should be <\/TAG> within embedded(inline) JavaScript

  • Website Enhancements
  • Replace the ASP Error page with something more user-friendly

  • Let us see user profiles (including message history)

  • If cookies disabled - a message to the user that they need to be enabled when viewing online collections

  • Custom online skins (also solves any translation worries)

  • Add 'IVS' to the spell check!

  • Make the spell check ignore formatting tags (it ignores b, i, u but complains about li, blockquote, a, img [including URLs for a/img)

  • Basic sorting/filtering for Online Collections

  • When viewing other users' collections, it should flag DVDs that you also own somehow (with filters to exclude genres)

  • Make private sort titles work online (picked up from app? or set on website?)

  • Turn wishlist into 'giftlist' (like a wedding list?)

  • Better forum search

  • Request a loan via MyProfiler

  • Application Bugs
  • Actor linking popup fails to appear when IE7 beta is installed

  • Export euro properly to XML

  • Acceptance of non-numeric dates

  • Use/Lose mail server settings fields

  • $DPIMAGES doesn't parse properly when used as CSS background

  • Cannot submit image after skipping new image for that profile (works again after edit/save)

  • Prompted to contribute after all edits (even if no changes, even with manual entry)

  • Disable parental control for this session doesn't work when adding a disc (non-US only?)

  • When adjusting history of a disc via context menu entry, filters don't update until the profile is viewed. Using drop-down above profile works as expected

  • Problem with watched/purchased date - can't leave blank

  • Various problems when using large fonts

  • Application Enhancements
  • Plug-in API released (alpha, beta, buggy... just let us have it!)

  • Improved handling of boxsets (per feature? per disc? both?)

  • Export to HTML (reports? skins?)

  • More characters for title, description and role

  • Sort/Filter by runtime

  • Sort/Filter by description

  • Description field in reports

  • Field for B/W / Colour / Colorized

  • Move CC checkbox into subtitles section

  • Make it clear what each case type means (Dan W's scans)

  • Locks for every field

  • Rotatable text for reports

  • Lock all option to optionally exclude images

  • If I unlock a profile to accept an update, automatically relock it afterwards

  • More global price-finder (dvdpricecheck.co.uk/happyhunter?)

  • Numeric replacements for review bars (0-10)

  • Field for OOP

  • More genres to pick from (B/W, Silent, Crime, ?)

  • More genre 'slots' (5?)

  • Slipcover? checkbox

  • IVS-approved list of studio names

  • Trivia added to subtitles

  • Various Audio/Subs/Localities added - Flemish, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Audio Descriptive(audio),generic 'Other' locality

  • Save searches

  • AND/NOT for all searches as well as OR

  • Abiliity to set the purchase price exchange rate (per disc? or global?)

  • Tie ratings to age rather than MPAA (?)

  • Add Anime ratings system (how? not a locality..)

  • More detailed personalisation (order#, S+H/P&P, tax, coupon?)

  • 'Free' searches (like SQL queries. Or a field were terms are matched against everything (actors, overview, notes, studios...)

  • Automatically keep exported collection in sync with Profiler

  • Ability to hide unused/won't be used currencies to avoid UI clutter

  • Customisable toolbar

  • Bulk download of all reports (and skins?)

  • Replace listboxes with comboboxes - and periodically update presets to keep everyone in sync (cases?, studios?, audio/subs?, cast?)

I didn't realise the list was going to be that big when I started it though!

    Doug:

Proper handling of boxsets (inc double features?)

While I can think of many ways to handle boxsets, I am not so foolish as to think any of them are necessarily the "proper" way within the logic of the software. A different or improved way of handling boxsets is needed and supposedly on the way.

Your reference to locks for every field is good but leads to some other areas.

Ability for IVS screeners to selectively accept or deny submissions, instead of the current all or nothing. Ditto for users, also ability to see who is responsible for a submission would be useful, as would ability to see the users contribution notes to know from whence the data was derived. For instance many people are simply accepting incorrect data from DVDEmpire as correct such as Kill Bill being Disney/Buena Vista.

Your ideas with respect to Genres is good, with this question for you. Many times a Genre selection is purely subjective, such as our famous discussion of whether or STIV is a comedy or simply has comedic elements. This means that IVS, for purposes of the Online Db must establish a base for Genre and whatever you wish to call a title is your business but may not be reflected in the Online.

Why should Trivia become added to subtitles? As opposed to making it a feature.

The only other idea I see that I MAY have an issue with is your idea of allowing private sort to be part of Online. This MAY become a bandwidth issue, though I am not sure not being a Web developer. I think for the Online Sort=Title is perfectly OK, it lends some consistency to what a user OR a visitor is looking at if he is looking at mulitple collections. Visitors, especially will not be looking for your sort=James Bond 04, they will be looking for Thunderball.

Skip - some suggestions are mine, most are gleaned from the forums. It's not so much 'I want' as 'at-least-one-person wants', so I'm not gonna argue too much

I was already rewording the boxset item as you posted

Publicly viewable contribution notes is already on the list

We have a feature checkbox for commentaries, but also note its presence as an audio track - a trivia track is a subtitle and should be noted. It probably should have its own checkbox as well.

Online private sorts - should be optional if added - but if someone is visiting my online collection and I'm a bit eccentric then they will just have to put up with it

    Doug,

    Website enhancement:-

Ability to go the the 'first unread message' in a thread. Almost everyother forums has this ability.

    Application bugs to add :-

xml export doesn't export the date of an event.

    Application enhancements :-

Abiliity to set the purchase price exchange rate

dvd changer support (covered with multiple disc sets maybe)
ability with multiple discs to assign covers to each disc (maybe each disc in a boxset is in an amaray, each with a different cover).

Disassociate ratings from being based upon the US ones. Some just don't match up. Instead tie them all to a minimum age.

    Custom Fields with definable types

Fields in personalisation for order number, shipping cost and maybe tax/duty, coupon etc (would really like full purchasing info).

    sql like searches

would like to be able to do things with flags (like edit, remove, personalise, print, export).

Have an 'auto export' feature that keeps your collection.xml upto date.

Ability to select what currencies you see, rather than having the full list.

Ability to select what localities to see in a particular region. Once the R2 list is complete, its going to be very large.

Ability to customise the button bar on the top to include/exclude any of the menu items. For example, I doubt if many people use the 'skin' button that frequently (for me, it's never). So, I would like to remove it. I would prefer to see the 'filter' button there. Also, I'd like to see the 'change locality' button etc.

Ability to have dvdprofiler automatically download new/modified reports/skins. You could make this an option. I found it a pain to search for a report on the dvdprofiler site. What would be nicer, is to just have it automatically download them all. It's not that they change that frequently.

Where you have 'hardcoded' case types, languages, etc (and descriptions to a certain extent), why not include an 'other' option. In which you can type in whatever you want. Then when the title is contributed it could be flagged up at your end, and you could approve it etc and then update everyone's to be the same.

On the reports (purchase date one specifically, but I guess it will apply to all). It would be good to be able to define either a range or more importantly a frequency. For example, I don't really care, that I bought 3 discs on 1st Aug 02 and then 8 on the 15th Aug. I would prefer to set the frequency to 'month', and have it tell me how many discs I purchased in 'August'.

Ability to batch up contributions, rather than do them as you do it. When the popup 'contribute now' appears, you should have 3 options 'contribute now', 'contribute later', and 'don't contribute'. If you choose 'contribute  later', you should then be able to do a 'send contributions' so it should remember it and all the others you marked as 'send later'.

When removing a dvd, you now get prompted if you want to remove the images as well. Can we have an option, so that you can choose (a) prompt you like it currently does, (b) never remove them, (c) always remove them without asking (which is the one I'd use).

That's a lot of suggestions, including some I haven't heard before. There are certainly a few gems in there though.

Not sure I get your ratings thing though Andy - AFAIK the application just treats them as levels (UK U=US G=Level1, UK PG=US PG=Level2 etc). I don't think the application tries to directly equivicate the different systems...

I've paraphrased/shortened most of them for the main list (still got your orignals to refer to) - let me know if you think I've got it completely wrong

Japanese Audio tracks on every disc in online collection

    This only affects locked titles.

    Other website bugs:
Some special characters don't show up correctly online (en-dash, em-dash)
Dolby surround tracks show up as 5.1 online.

Program enhancements: As long as we're improving double features, make watched-by work with them correctly.  We should be able to track different watched-by dates for each feature, not each DVD or set.

Thai is another common language not currently listed.

Why not?  That's exactly what I had in mind.  It would make cast lists easier and more meaningful and allow you to track how far you are in watching a series.

I can see what you mean - but marking 22 episodes 'watched' would take a quite a while (unless marking the 'set' watched, marked individual titles as well).

Why would you mark them all at once?  Do you really watch 22 episodes in one sitting?

An excellent idea - at the moment I have to write notes on the boxset indicating exactly which episode I have watched and with whom.

When my wife bought season 9 of Friends (in English, the German version sucks!!!), she had me come home from work early , she sent the kids to grandma , she allowed me to eat in the livingroom   and we watched ( I slept some) almost all of them that night...

Also, some people try to stay off the PC sometimes (doesn't work) and do an update once a week.

OK, yall have fun now, ya hear

I'll try to explain. For example

    Day 1 - Buffy S7 arrives
    Day 2 - I watch Disc 1/6 (eps 1-4)
    Day 3 - I watch Disc 2/6 (eps 5-8)
    ...
Day 7 - I have watched them all and mark the set as watched. This effectively marks each episode/disc as watched as well because we don't seperate them out.

If each episode had its own mini-profile, then I would have to mark 22 episodes as watched individually. I personally have better things to do than mark individual episodes as watched so I would like my current practice (mark the box set) to automaticallly propagate down through to the individual episodes.

This would also allow the people who wanted to mark episodes individually for whatever reason (watch 1/week?) to do just that.
